A diagnosis of cancer can be a very frightening ordeal, not just for the patient, but also for the family. The human body is made up of thousands of cells that renew and regenerate themselves in a natural process. However, there are times when a group of cells display uncontrolled growth. This growth can sometimes turn malignant and infect surrounding tissues, or spread through blood.
Cancer can affect any individual irrespective of age or gender. Although, many treatments are available they come with severe side effects. With the advancement of science and technology, many researches now look towards natural products for their healing and rejuvenating properties. One such nature’s gift is acai berry.
Acai berry grows on the acai palm in the Amazon swamps and is endowed with powerful antioxidant properties, which is the base of many cancer treatments. Research carried out by Stephen Talcott, an assistant professor with the University of Florida shows that acai berry contains certain compounds that can inhibit the growth and spread of cancerous cells. He opines this on the basis of a laboratory controlled test he carried out on leukemic cells, where acai berry extracts were used. Depending on the type and quantity of the extract and concentration, 35 to 86 percent of cancerous cells can be eliminated. The results were published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2006.
Abundantly found antioxidants in acai berry such as anthocyanins and flavonoids have a major role to play in controlling and curing cancer cells. Cells get damaged due to free radicals, which are unstable cellular molecules. As these free radicals grow in number, they start destabilizing other healthy cells, leading to cell mutation. Cell mutation is one of the reasons for cancer occurrence.
Antioxidants neutralize the damaging effects of these cells as well as inhibit their growth. Furthermore other nutrients found in acai berry help to flush out toxins from the body. The berries aid in natural detoxification. Acai berries have a considerably large amount of antioxidants and phytonutrients as compared to other berries.
More tests are being repeatedly carried out by major research centers to establish a relationship between acai berry antioxidants and cancer prevention. Although, laboratory controlled tests do show a remarkable progress in controlling cancer with the use of acai berry, how the human body’s metabolism will react to the absorption of these antioxidants and the subsequent percentage of cells eliminated is yet under research. Nevertheless, acai berry has potential to cure cancer.
