Superman is a much loved super hero known to us for many decades. But, much to our disappointment we grew up and learned he’s only a fictional character. There is no Superman who’s going to save us. But before we get entirely disappointed that a man in blue isn’t there to save our lives, we should be pleased to find that there is in fact a small, purple, grape-like fruit that has all the beneficial factors that can almost save a person’s life. This fruit I’m talking about is the acai berry, fondly known as the super berry.

The acai berry is found in the dense Amazonian forests of Brazil. It’s funny, I know, to compare a fruit to a super hero, but this tiny berry, if consumed regularly can change a person’s life. The acai berry is an important component of almost every Brazilian’s daily diet. It is rich in many vital acids like oleic acid, palmitic acid and linoleic acid. The first mentioned acid, oleic acid is used to reduce the risk of a particular disease called ALD, a disease that affects the brain. It also helps in boosting an individual’s memory. Palmitic acid is used as an anti-psychotic medicine and is also used to give people energy. So let us forget those carbonated drinks claiming to give us energy and consume a tasty acai berry smoothie instead!

For all those who are weight conscious and like to maintain a size zero figure, here’s good news for you. Linoleic acid that is present in the berry has the property of helping people lose weight. This sounds like a great package to me. For all those who like to spend a quiet evening with a glass of red wine, reconsider. The acai berry contains a compound called anthocyanin which reduces the risk of heart disease. Although red wine also contains this very compound, the alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages containing acai berry contains almost thirty times more anthocyanin than that present in red wine. Alcoholic beverages containing this berry are slowly finding their way onto the shelves in grocery stores.

The acai berry is often compared to grapes and blueberries for its anti-aging effect due to the combination of anthocyanin and antioxidant vitamins, and research has shown that it contains ten times as many antioxidants as grapes and twice as many as blueberries. It also aids in better blood circulation and better sleep. Due to the variety of artificial and packaged foods in the market, the number of people being attacked by cancer around the world is on a definite rise. The acai berry also helps in fighting cancer cells.

It is important to consume the acai berry in its natural form. It can be consumed as a delicious fruit salad along with other fruits. For those who like to experiment with their taste buds, a juice or a smoothie is definitely recommended.

It is fascinating to learn that this small berry found in the dense forests of the Amazon, almost unknown to many, could have such an influential effect on the human life! The acai berry: a splendid creation of God indeed!
